The problem with not smoking is the smell.
People say when you stop smoking, you regain your sense of smell. That's technically true, but I find you pretty much regain the ability to smell bad things the most. When I smoked, I could smell everything I wanted - the jasmine vines blooming in my yard, the hop aroma on a fresh sierra nevada, that sweet grassy tarragon-like smell of the weeds on highways on hot dry days, the little bit of cumin and cilantro in my favorite salsa, the special floral notes that distinguish key limes from those big honking persian ones. Not smoking allows you to also pick up the other end of the spectrum - a cheesey sweaty fat guy at a concert, the patchouli-ass-and-onion-ring smell on some hippies, dishes left in the sink too long.
